Reps summon Health Minister, NAFDAC over plastic packaging of water

The House of Representatives on Wednesday summoned the Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, to appear before it to explain likely effects of using plastic containers to package foods and beverages.
Also, Yetunde Oni, the acting Director-General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), was summoned to appear before the house.
The decision was sequel to a motion by Sergius Ogun (Edo-PDP) entitled: “Need to Regulate the Use of Bisphenol “A”(BPA) Plastics in the Production of Bottled Water”.
Moving the motion, Mr. Ogun expressed concern over the effects of drinking water in plastic containers that had been left under the sun or near a heat source, which had been linked to degenerative diseases.
He explained that plastics are hydrocarbons obtained from crude oil which, when heated, become unstable and slowly release chemicals into water.
According to him, most plastics contain a chemical known as Bisphenol “A”, also known as “environmental estrogen” which causes reproductive defect and neurological abnormalities and prostrate issues.
“During the hot and humid weather, the demand for water is on the increase and as such, production of bottled water is on the rise.
“The production of bottled water in most parts is unregulated.
“As a result, the use of BPA plastics, which are by far cheaper than the non-BPA, is generally used by companies producing bottled water,” he said.
Other lawmakers that contributed to the debate called for sensitisation of the public on the health hazard of using plastic bottles to package drinks and foods.
In his contributions, Oghene Egoh (Lagos-PDP) said, “we need to educate the public on this.“
Also, Rotimi Agunsoye (Lagos-APC), warned against the dangerous effects of Bisphenol “A“ to the body.
“It is important that we inform NAFDAC and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to educate and sensitise the public on health hazard of using plastics to package drinks and foods,’’ Mr. Agunsoye said.
The motion was unanimously adopted by members when it was put to a voice vote by Speaker Yakubu Dogara.
It was referred to the House Committee on Healthcare Services for further legislative action.

Nigeria sports minister calls emergency meeting over Super Eagles loss to South Africa

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, is to hold an emergency meeting with the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation on Tuesday.
The meeting will hold at the minister’s conference room at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja at 2 p.m.
This is coming on the heels of the Super Eagles 0-2 loss to visiting Bafana Bafana at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium Uyo at the weekend. Nigeria is now 3rd on their Group E table behind South Africa and Libya.
Meanwhile, the Minister has called on football lovers and Nigerians generally to collectively support the Super Eagles in their quest for an Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup ticket.
“This is a temporary setback which is surmountable. We need to sit with the technical committee and crew to find out the immediate and remote causes of this setback.
“We have very young talented players in the Super Eagles and we trust that with more hard work and determination, this result can be reversed when we go to South Africa.
“This is just the beginning of a long journey. The Super Eagles will definitely be in Cameroon because we can’t afford to be absent at the Africa Cup of Nations for a third consecutive time. We must do all within our means to support the team when they win and when there’s a setback. We will ensure that no stone is left unturned in our pursuit of a ticket to Cameroon,” Mr. Dalung assured.
