JAMB gives update on 2017/2018 admission process

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board,
JAMB, on Sunday, said it would partner with
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to conduct
public examination through Computer Based
Test, CBT, for Nigerians abroad.
The examination board also said universities
that charged more than N2,000 from applicants
for its post-UTME examination will be made to
refund the excess payment.
JAMB’s Head of Public Relations, Fabian
Benjamin, made these known in an interview
with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in
Abuja.
Mr. Benjamin said that the collaboration was to
enhance the conduct of Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination, UTME, for foreign
candidates in 2018.
He said 2017 UTME was conducted for foreign
candidates on September 30 in Gambia, Saudi
Arabia, United Kingdom, Ghana, Ivory Coast,
Benin Republic, Ethiopia, South Africa and
Cameroun.
According to him, although the conduct of the
examination was not justifiable, in terms of
monetary value, there is need for JAMB to
collaborate, to promote growth in the education
sector.

“We are already promoting CBT in line with
international best practices; we have taken it
to some countries in Africa, we need to do
more to encourage the practice.
“We have even gone ahead to see how we can
put some countries on the global map by
conducting our public examination there
through CBT.
“What we want to do is to partner with the
ministry to be able to key into the global
technology revolution as part of our foreign
policy.
“We must be able to maximise profit, especially
from West African countries that we are
offering assistance, through scholarship, to
school in Nigeria.
“We cannot achieve much by looking at things
from naira and kobo, but through diplomatic
relations there will be adequate room to gain
through conduct of examination abroad,” he
said.
The head of public relations explained that
foreign candidates sat for examination in one
session based on local time of their various
countries, adding that the questions were
deployed from the Board’s headquarters.
He decried message on the social media that
the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, had
directed the refund of post UTME fee,
describing the information as false and could
create confusion in the public domain.
Mr. Benjamin urged the public to disregard the
information, saying that institutions that had
charged more than N2,000 would be asked to
make refund of the excess.
He described as unfortunate a situation where
some institutions could not adhere to the
minister’ directive about the payment of post-
UTME.

5 best ways to study and assimilate well

Studying while in school is a great way to
attain or achieve success in your
academics. Studying requires a great
amount of effort and time. Even if you
practice it for days, weeks or a month,
the result won't be productive if your
brain isn’t performing well. Still, there are
fairly easy ways you can apply to improve
quickly and effectively.
If you're having trouble with studying I’m
going to show you a huge list of
techniques and tips to help you attain this
goal and of course to maintain it as time
goes by. Many student find it hard to
study this is because they waste there
time on irrelevant things, and are less
motivated to study. The only time they
study is a day before there exams that's
why there results Keep on worsening.
Even if studying may seem boring, you
have to never (NEVER) give up on
studying. Studying has never been the
most exciting aspects of school but
When you focus your thought in it , you
increase its strength".
With a sense of determination, and by
implementing some effective study
techniques, even the dullest subjects can
be conquered. Keep reading to learn how
to study as a student.
1. Choose a good place for your studies:
While studying it is very important to
choose a good place.Find a calm area,
such as a study room, a
library, or even an empty class where
lessons are finished; if you prefer to
study outdoors, try to find a place where
no distractions are present. Try to stay
away from any environment where people
that will distract you its so you can
concentrate on your work. Learn to be
calmly concentrated and be
concentratedly calm.
2. Make a study Timetable or plan:
Arrange a schedule for study time, Make
a weekly plan of your study sessions, with
specific subjects to study each day. This
allows you to build studying time into a
habit, making you more likely to follow
through on studying. After few weeks
probably months you will adapt to the
schedule, and you will know exactly what
to study, time to spend studying and
when to study every day of the week.
Scheduling your studies will also make
your life easier because managing your

partner while you are studying, switch off
your phone and switch it on only when
you are taking a break or when you are
done.
4. Get materials for studying:
While studying, all your materials should
be within arm's reach so you don’t
distract yourself by going to search for
maerials. Your studying materials should
include things like notes books,
textbooks, study guides, papers, pen,
pencils or anything else you might need
to concentrate and be productive while
studying, Clean the things that are not
related with what you have to study off

atleast one practice called meditation.
Meditation is the most
powerful of all studying enhancement
techniques, this teaches you to focus
your mind on one thing at a time.
Actually, when we try to meditate, it is
concentration that is the first thing we
need to master.
5. Stay calm and study:
Before studying a topic, research what
are the most frequently asked questions
for that subject. Start
with 15-20 questions regarding the entire
content; target the most important
aspects and focus your
brain on the primary characteristics.
Moreover, since these issues are the
most demanded, they are
more likely to be requested during an
examination session. You have then the
chance to give a positive response in the
exam because you knew that those
issues would have emerged! start from
the most frequently asked questions to
study something that may be hard to
study. This process will simplify the
subjects you are trying to study (so it
helps with focusing) and will feed your
mind with a general overview of the
entire topic.
5. Get a study partner:
Studying with someone will help you
clarify the concepts you did not
understand well, break the normal routine
of studying alone and make a point on a
subject that may be difficult. Your
knowledge together with the knowledge
of your classmates is a great weapon to
beat the burden of studying.
At last, i want to say that if you follow all
this step as a daily routine then i will
promise you your concentration, grades,
marks must be improved.

Lawyer threatens to sue JAMB over refusal to upload candidates’ UTME results

AN Osogbo based legal practitioner, Mr Bolarinwa Abidoye, on Wednesday threatened to sue the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over alleged failure of the examination body to upload result of his ward and several others candidates that chose Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile Ife, as first choice.
Abidoye, who claimed he will institute litigation against the examination body as a parent, and on behalf of many other candidates of JAMB, whose results were not sent to their institutions, accused JAMB of alleged negligence.
While speaking to the Nigerian Tribune, in Osogbo, Abidoye, who maintained that JAMB admitted not uploading the result of his son in error, lamented that Abidoye Alfred Ajibade, his child, scored 237 and intend studying Law in Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU).
According to him, “to our surprise, JAMB has refused to upload result of my son. I later discovered several other candidates’ results are being held by JAMB for no reason. Registration for post UTME of OAU closes in another 24 hours and yet the result has not been uploaded to OAU website by JAMB.”
My son is depressed. In the course of struggling to get to the root of the matter, my wife, Mrs Abidoye went to JAMB office in Abuja to find out. Head of ICT of the exam body, Mr. Okoro was not on seat. The next officer to him, Mrs Usman was not on seat. One Mr Adewale who spoke to us, owned up to the error. He said it was a mistake on their part that the result was not uploaded”.
To our dismay, he said nothing may be done on the issue until Thursday (Today) when registration for post UTME for those that chose OAU would have ended.
“I also met the state officer of JAMB, one Mrs Alade. She initially claimed they have uploaded result of all OAU candidates. She later recanted. Alot of candidates that i met there could not just bear the trauma. You know they are kids. Many of them were crying and yet, no solution in sight. I am taking JAMB to court to demand a sum of N1billion onbehalf of all those that have suffered negative consequence of JAMB’s negligence,” Abioye remarked.
All efforts to reach officer in-charge of Osun JAMB office, proved futile as several calls to her mobile line did not go through.

#HAVE A SAY..........How Many Patients Per Nurses? Correct Nurse To Patient Ratio

Nurse to patient ratio is probably one of the most talked about issues in nursing. And apparently, it’s also one of the most common reasons why nurses leave the profession. When an institution suffers from short staffing, bad things start to happen. Nurses become grumpier and the quality of care they deliver decreases. Infections increase and patients stay longer in the hospital. These things don’t only affect nurses and patients; they can be bad for the health institution, too.

The Problem Worsens
There are tons of things that force nurses to hang their nursing caps and just quit work. Bullying, burnout, and poor working conditions are probably some of the reasons you are already familiar with.

These things easily make one out of five fresh nurses quit the profession within their first year of getting a license. One out of three, on the other hand, quit within the first two years of starting work.

With more nurses quitting work, most institutions require nurses to take longer shifts, reduce their off days and take on more patients than necessary. One good reason is that institutions don’t see hiring more nurses as cost-effective.

In reality, however, they actually end up spending more in addressing the poor outcomes of short staffing and poor nurse-patient ratio.

What Is The Correct Nurse-Patient Ratio?
The American Nurses Association advocates for a legislative model wherein nurses have the autonomy to create a staffing plan that will meet the demands of their units and patients. This approach allows for a staffing plan that’s flexible and can be adjusted based on the following:

Number of admissions
Minimum number of nurses
Staffing level advised by specialty nursing organizations
Number of discharges and transfers
The level of education, training and experience of the staff
The intensity of patient needs
Unit geography and availability of technology
Patient numbers
Availability of ancillary staff and other resources
In determining staffing ratios, it’s a good idea for institutions to sit down with their nurses as they are the people who are in direct charge of patient care. They have a realistic view of what goes on in each unit and what problems they encounter.

What Does The Law Require?
In California, there are clearly and legally defined minimum nurse to patient ratios that are supposed to be maintained at all times. For example, for Intensive/ Critical Care, one nurse should only care for two patients. The same ratio applies to Neonatal Intensive Care, Post Anesthesia Recovery and Labor and Delivery. A 1:1 ratio applies for the Operating Room and Trauma patients in the ER.

Apart from California, there are 14 other states in the country that legally address nurse staffing. Seven of these states legally require hospitals to have staffing committees that will take charge in creating staffing plans and policies. This includes OH, OR, CT, NV, WA and IL.

Just recently, Democratic State Senator Mike Skindell reintroduced a bill that mimics the California law on safe staffing. It mandates a 1:1 nurse to patient ratio in certain areas of the hospital as well as prevents nurses from being overloaded and overworked.

The bill prohibits mandatory overtime as well as the use of cameras to substitute for nurses. It also prohibits the layoff of supporting personnel and practical nurses.

Why Does Proper Nurse To Patient Ratio Matter?
Proper nurse to patient ratio doesn’t only help achieve clinical improvements but it also offers economic benefits.

Here’s what adequate staffing can provide:
Decreased patient care cost related to readmissions from poor outcomes
Reduced medication errors
Decreased length of patient stay
Increased patient satisfaction
Reduced patient mortality
Safe staffing has also been found out to increase chances of stroke survival. When there are enough trained nurses, patients have a better chance of getting over the aftermath of stroke.

In the study, the addition of one trained nurse per 10 beds can reduce patient death after a month by as much as 30%. After a year, chances of death goes down by 12%.

What Can You Do?
Short staffing can be hard to deal with, particularly if you’ll be dealing with the actual institution you are working for. There are, however, a few things you can do to advocate safe staffing while staying employed.

Use the SBAR method in communicating your ideas
The SBAR method simply refers to Situation, Background, Assessment, Response. It’s a technique you can use to discuss staffing issues with the management. You can start with your immediate superior since most institutions follow a chain of command. Assess the response you get and find out the next best person you can talk to in order to get a better response.

Join nursing organizations
There are a couple of nursing organizations and groups that advocate for nurses’ rights. If you happen to belong to a union, make sure that your group is respectfully and positively working with your employer to avoid any conflicts that can affect the nurses in your institution.

Update your skills
As short staffing continues to be a problem, you should be more consistent in updating your training and improving your skills. This way you’ll be able to provide the best care to your patients despite your poor working conditions. It will also put you in the best position possible to advocate for your rights as well as your patients
